KABOOM

Kaboom is an arcade style battle royal game for 2-4 players. The action is fast paced and explosive. Blow up the world, collect powerups, and slide bombs across the map to defeat your friends in the most epic ways imaginable. There can be only one.

Dev Blog

Feb 10, 2020 Like most games, we began with just a few cubes for walls and a pill for a player character. Our first steps were to implement the most simple game mechanics like movement and collision.
Feburary 12, 2020 We added game controller support to Kaboom. This challenging effort was made simple using EZ Gamepad, a unity asset.
Feburary 16, 2020 We added more players to the game. Now, Kaboom will detect the number of controllers that are connected and spawn up to 4 different player pills. We have also introduced the ability to plant bombs.
Feburary 24, 2020 We implemented the ability to throw bombs in any direction. Bombs can bounce off of walls. To test this we created a game map that had many walls and obstacles to see how the bombs would interact. We decided that a big map was better but we did not want it to be too cluttered.
Mar 05, 2020 We have been playing with the design of the map. This image shows our early prototype where the center of the map will light up when King of the Hill game mode is enabled.
Mar 10, 2020 We have added the first iteration of music to the game as well as sound effects. The music is a funky tune that we composed, although we may change it later on.
Mar 12, 2020 Our game design has greatly evolved. We have decided to embrace the lego type design concept and created a map with a beach theme. This map shows destructable and indestructable cubes.
Mar 17, 2020 Our latest iteration of Kaboom shows the implementation of flags, a rudimentary game timer, and a more strecthed out map. The colored cubes are powerups that when picked up will buff the players stats. The flags will trigger the start of king of the hill when 3 are held by a single player.
Mar 22, 2020 The lego style design for our player character has evolved greatly. We also now have a design for the health bar and ammo. Since Kaboom is meant to be played on a massive screen, we descided to place all information about our player above the character so that users will not have to look away from the gameplay to see their health or ammo.
Mar 24, 2020 We have continued to evolve the character design, adding an aiming arrow to the health bar.
Mar 25, 2020 After playing the game in its previous state we realized that the map was too small and too chaotic with 4 players. To rectify this, we increased the size of the map and found the game to much more enjoyable.
Mar 27, 2020 After developing with primitives, we decided it was time to implement the actual character asset with its health bar and ammo. We realized that the character had to be shrunk down so that it looks the correct size.
Apr 1, 2020 Now we have added in the destructable blocks, multiple characters, and random placement of the power up items ( still in their development asset form). We also added friction to prevent the bombs from being thrown across the map. We are still finishing the implementation of the health bar and xp system.
Apr 1, 2020 Gone are the colored cubes that we had been using for power-ups for so long during development. We have incorporated these assets, that are soon to be wearable. The power-ups include: sunglasses, shoes, belt, helmet, and boxing gloves.
Apr 1, 2020 We have added in the king of the hill component of the game. Once any player collects three flags, the king of the hill location opens up in the center of the map. The floor of this area changes color to green and the funky game music fades out and changes to a more frantic tune. The flag holder can now collect 2 points per second until they die or the king of the hill timer runs out.
Apr 10, 2020 Our Lego-inspired character can now walk! The was the culmination of a lot of work and effort by our animator Ross, and we are very proud of the end product.
Apr 14, 2020 We needed a way to keep track of the points and xp that players accumulate over the course of the game. To solve this issue, we implemented animated bars, orange for score purple for xp.
Apr 15, 2020 We continue to improve the visuals of our game. This screenshot shows two players, one (red) has collected all of the powerups and their character is wearing them. You can see the comparison between the blue character who has not collected any powerups.
Apr 18, 2020 The sandstorm animating is our first new elements of the endgame. If the clock hits 1 minute without a winner, the sandstorm signals the beginning of the end.
Apr 24, 2020 We have now incorporated a dying animation for our lego-inspired characters. They no longer just disappear but explode sending plastic limbs everywhere.
Apr 28, 2020 What to do when you need to take a break or restart? Pause the game with the start button. We added in a gui menu that puts the game on hold momentarily. You can navigate the menu with the left joysitck of the gamepad and resume, head back to the main screen or quit if you wish.
May 1st, 2020 As we approach the final release of our game, we added in a title screen that has info about our company so that players can marvel at the names of the hard working students who put this game together. We also added a new, upbeat midi tune to go with it.
May 5th, 2020 After playing the game ourselves, we realized that it could be difficult knowing who was who once the game began. Was red player 2 or 3? Who was the king of the hill? We made a few tweaks to the colors to make this information readily seen.

Mahesh has a BS in Computer Science and a Minor in Mathematics. He is now working towards his Masters in computer science at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
